Saint Mary Salomé

In a design imitative of a wood sculpture, the saint is placed in a stylized boat and carries a spice jar. The jar is her attribute, referring to the spices she brought to Jesus' tomb on the day of the Resurrection (Mark 16:1-2). The boat refers to the voyage she is said to have taken after the death of Stephen in Jerusalem – to the Camargue in France in some accounts, to Lazio in Italy in others. Both kinds of accounts have her accompanied by "Mary Jacobé," the mother of James the Less, but that Mary is not shown here.
